He was taken in by his town's doctor, who taught him the arts of medicine and healing magic. His foster father as well-meaning but strict, insisting that he study rather than playing with other children. Emery spent this time reading rather than socializing. As a result, Emery is a person who is insecure and deeply lonely, unsure how to reach out to others, who struggles to form connections unless the other party reaches out to him first.Emery is a loyal and steadfast friend and ally, standing alongside his friends and loved ones always.
Pre-A Realm Reborn
Before becoming an adventurer, Emery live and worked in his hometown as a doctor and healer. The hellish skies of the Calamity awoke his Echo, which would go on to cause him mental and psychological damage by showing him visions of the deaceased parents he could not remember and whose absence he had never particularly cared about. He lived lie this for five years, until he could bear it no longer.Emery left his hometown with two goals: find someone who knew about the condition that was his Echo, and expand his knowledge of healing and medicine. He had heard that Sharlayan was the realm's center of knowledge, and so aimed to travel there to find help and join the Studium. Unfortunately, he didn't have enough money for a ticket to Sharlayan, so he returned to the Black Shroud, deciding to refine his knowledge of conjury with the conjurer's guild while working as an adventurer to earn money for a ticket to Sharlayan.
A Realm Reborn
Emery joined the Scions of the Seventh Dawn out of a desire to help others while also learning about the Echo. Traversing Eorzea was susprisingly fun, and Emery wound up enjoying himself as he quested to save the realm.Emery got along well with his fellow Scions, though he found Thancred to be irritating and Minfilia to be forgettable. While Thancred would come to grow on him, he would never be able to properly remember Minfilia. He got along well with Urianger, finding they had much in common, but Emery's propensity for travel combined with Urianger's tendencay to remain at the Waking Sands meant they didn't spend too much time together.
Heavensward
The wintery region of Coerthas, the absence of his friends, and the lingering consequences of the bloody banquet made for a more somber adventure than his previous outing. Nevertheless, Emery managed to find a level of enjoyment in his time in Ishgard. A large part of this was Hourchefant, with whom Emery fell in love. The pair were engaged to be wed for a short time, until the former's untimley death. In the wake of Haurchefant's death, things changed for Emery. His questing was no longer so enjoyable, and became an issue of duty and necessity rather than any ejoyment. In the aftermath of the Dragonsong War, he confided in Urianger, who was still grieving Moenbryda, asking for advice on how to grieve and move on. During this period of shared mourning the two grew closer, forging a strong bond. Even in the wake of Urianger's time with the Warriors of Darkness, the two remained close, with Emery setting aside time to go out of his way and visit Urianger in the Waking Sands.
Stormblood
The death of Papalymo followed immediately by the death and destruction of war took a heavy toll on Emery. He was slowly being crushed by the weight of all of the lives he had to take, of all the destruction he saw and caused by his own hand. As time wore on, Emery began to feel less and less like a person, and more and more like a weapon. Or a monster. Regardless what it was, he no longer considered himself a person. His depression hit its lowest point, his anxiety and stress hit their peaks, his sense of isolation felt worse than ever, and he began to yearn for a death that wouldn't come.
Shadowbringers
The First was an amazing and magical place that charmed Emery... for a moment. As soon as the death and destruction resumed, he returned to no longer caring for his life, hoping that his "light-powered turbo-cancer" would ultimately kill him. The light-poisoning changed his body, lightening the blue of his eyes and turning his hair from an ink black to a shining silver, turning his reflection into someone he no longer recognized, another factor in his desire for an end.Urianger acted as his nurse, taking care of him as the symptoms of his light-poisoning worsened, and through this the two's bond grew deeper and deeper, until they ultimately fell in love. Emery would be the one to confess, not wanting to die with his feelings going unspoken, a mistake he had witnessed from many around him. To his surprise, Urianger reciprocated his feelings, and the two entered into a relationship. Though the reveal that Urianger had been keeping a secret again was a significant hurdle for them, Emery was ultimately able to forgive him and the pair continued their relationship. With Urianger's love, life for Emery began to regain its color, and his life seemed to be worth living again.
Post-Shadowbringers
Upon the Scions' return to the Source, Emery and Urianger announced their relationship to their friends, with the former taking up writing. Upon learning from G'raha Tia that Count Edmont de Fortemps's memoirs of the Dragonsong war provided hope to the people of the ruinous future from which he had come, Emery began to publish the other adventures he had been on. His books are invariably best-sellers, and can be difficult to get a hold of.
Endwalker
With life finally looking up for Emery, he was naturally unwilling to let the world be destroyed by Fandaniel and Zenos. Not when he felt there was a purpose to living again. The revelation that it was ultimately depression and entropy which threatened the world hit close to home for him, given how he had only just crawled out of a very dark place himself. Though this particular adventure weighed upon him in the suffering he was forced to witness and endure himself, Emery forged onward, knowing that there was a sense of peace waiting for himself and Urianger somewhere.
Post-Endwalker
in the aftermath of the Final Days, Emery traveled with Urianger and Thancred across the land, helping those they came across, meeting new people, seeing new places and new cultures, and overall remembering why it was he came to love adventuring in the first place. After a time, Emery proposed to Urianger, and the two purchased a house in Limsa Lominsa and settled down.
Dawntrail
Emery and Urianger were called to help Tuliyollal before they could marry, however this presented a unique opportunity to Emery. The family of his deceased mother lived in Tuliyollal, and he had a chance to reconnect with the only blood family he had left. Wanting to meet his family, Emery agreed to help Wuk Lamat (along with wanting to ensure the wrong person didn't become Dawnservant, of course)Wanting to hedge their bets in ensuring that someone suitable would come to lead Tuliyollal, the couple agreed to temporarily split, with Emery supporting Wuk Lamat and Urianger working with Koana.Emery enjoyed traveling through Tural and learning of its myriad peoples and cultures, and was welcomed into the arms of his maternal family. All in all, Emery's time in Tuliyollal was ejoyable, and for the first time in a long time he enjoyed adventuring again. His time in Solution Nine, unfortunately, was far less pleasant, proving to be very emotionally draining. Thankfully Urianger was there to support him.
Post-Dawntrail
Following the events of Dawntrail, Emery and Urianger were married in the garden of the Leveilleur estate, surrounded by their friends and loved ones. They spent two weeks honeymooning in Tuliyollal, enjoying themselves thoroughly.
